| Repair or Replace a Tired PC? |
|
As our computers age we tend to see a loss of efficiency in day to day operating tasks. Our systems tend to take longer to start-up, programs take longer to open, etc, etc. When compared to a new system, it may even seem that the system in question is from the stone age. So when is it a good time to purchase a new system, and when are we better off upgrading and repairing our current system?
This question really comes down to a couple of things. The first is cost. It is important to analyze the cost versus benefit you will see purchasing new versus upgrading and repairing. As a general rule, if your system is over 3-4 years old, it is in most cases a better option to simply purchase a new system. However, for specialty systems, servers, tablets, etc this may not always be the case. Data, more specifically, the amount of data that needs to be transfered to the new computer will play a large role in the ease of upgrading to a new PC. If your system is 1-3 years old, and you purchased a mid to upper lever computer, an upgrade is very likely a good solution to your situation. Upgrading can in most cases be a cost effective solution to purchasing new. In fact, depending on the upgrade, you may surpass the specifications or performance of a new system at half the cost. Upgrades such as additional memory, a faster CPU, and more hard drive space can add new life to a tiring PC. Usability and convenience items such as a larger monitor, specialty input devices, and task specific software can offer conveniences that may be appealing in a new PC. It may seem like we are generalizing a bit here, but this decision is really a question of specific circumstances, budget, and personal preference. The best way to decide for yourself on the correct route to take is to weigh the costs and gains of upgrading or repairing versus buying new. Remember that with purchasing new, there may be other costs that have to be taken into consideration such as set-up of your new system or the cost of having a technician transfer you existing data to your new PC. If considering an upgrade, make sure you have a firm price, with all options covered, to ensure your comparison takes every detail into account. With a little leg work you will indeed find a solution that works with your needs and your budget. Also, remember, if you are considering buying a new computer, consider having a computer custom built. It's really your best option for a new system and offers allot of flexibility compared to store bought units.
