If you need additional computer help call On-Site at 1-888-725-4509. • Keep the inside of your computer case clean. This is an extremely important and often over looked aspect to owning a computer. Dust, dirt, and debris will eventually coat the interior of your PC and it's components causing these components to over heat. Excessive heat is leading cause of premature failure. A recent On-Site article, How To Clean The Inside Of Your Computer will offer more specific step by step assistance for this task. • Keep the exterior of your case clean. This can be as important as keep the inside of the case clean for several reasons. First, on many cases, there are vents that can become clogged with dust and debris which will keep fresh air from entering the case. Also, case fans will collect dust and dirt causing them to become inefficient, and in some cases, stop working all together. When vents and fans are dirty or non-operational you will drastically reduce much needed air flow. Dust and dirt can also clog peripheral ports causing in-operation when a device is connected. • Be aware of all sounds. You will want to pay attention of the sounds your computer makes. Often, a strange sound may be the first indication of an impending problem. Clicking, whirling, squeaking, etc, are good signs that something is wrong. Try to isolate where the sound is coming from. If it's fan, replace it. If it sounds as if it is coming from a hard drive, get help right away. • Use surge protection! There is no point in maintaining your computer system if it doesn't' work. Without proper surge protection you are only asking for trouble. System components are very voltage sensitive. Even a small static shock can reek havoc on your computer. A spike in A/C current or other anomaly could be disastrous with out surge protection. • Use proper wire management. Having a rats nest can make it a small and timely challenge to do something other wise very simple, like clean or move your computer. Not to mention it's unsightly. Keep wires wrapped up, connectors tightened down, and keep wires from crossing areas where people and pets will walk. And speaking of pets, keep pets that chew away from areas where cables and wires are exposed. |
